Propane Truck Plunges Into Candlewood Lake

NEW FAIRFIELD, CT — A propane delivery truck rolled into Candlewood Lake Thursday morning while making a delivery to a private residence on Penny Lane in New Fairfield, according to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

DEEP said it received a call about the incident at approximately 9:39 a.m. The driver was connecting the truck to fill the home's propane system when the vehicle rolled over a retaining wall and into the lake, according to a release.

The incident damaged the home's propane service line and caused a propane release, but officials said the leak at the house has since been stopped. The truck, which is carrying approximately 2,000 gallons of propane, is not leaking propane or motor fuel, according to DEEP.

No injuries were reported, and there are no continuing leaks, environmental impacts or public safety concerns at this time, officials said.

Crews from the New Fairfield, Danbury and Sherman fire departments responded to secure the scene while DEEP coordinated the truck's removal. Officials said the recovery is expected to be an extended operation.

DEEP personnel are working with propane companies to develop a plan to safely remove the truck. Because it is more than 100 feet from the roadway, officials said crews expect to excavate part of the retaining wall and build a stone ramp so the vehicle can be removed from the lake.
