DANBURY, CT — Officials have identified the 38-year-old Danbury man who died in an apartment fire Sunday that also killed a dog and injured three firefighters.
Irving Alvarez-Godoy was identified as the victim of the Nov. 1 fire on Kohanza Street, city spokesperson Erin Henry confirmed Tuesday.
The fire remains under investigation, Henry said.
The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Alvarez-Godoy's cause of death was pending further studies, while the manner of death remained under investigation.
Emergency crews responded to the apartment complex shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of a fire and possible occupants trapped on the second floor.
A volunteer firefighter passing the building noticed smoke coming from a window and encountered a woman outside calling for help, officials previously said.
The firefighter attempted to enter the apartment through a window but was unable to proceed because of heavy smoke.
Additional crews arrived and used a ladder to access the second-floor apartment, where firefighters located Alvarez-Godoy and brought him outside.
Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Firefighters also found a dog inside the apartment, but attempts to revive the animal were unsuccessful.
Three firefighters suffered minor burns and were transported to a hospital for treatment.
