Connecticut Institute For Communities in Danbury Names Newest MD
Dr. Karin Michels-Ashwood is the newest doctor in the Internal Medicine Department at CIFC's Greater Danbury Community Health Center.
CT Institute: Connecticut Institute For Communities, Inc. (CIFC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Karin Michels-Ashwood is the newest doctor in the Internal Medicine Department at CIFC’s Greater Danbury Community Health Center (GDCHC).
Dr. Michels-Ashwood has spent her nearly 30-year career working in community health centers in New York and Connecticut. She received a bachelor’s in science degree in biomedical studies from the City College of New York through its Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program. She went on to earn her medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine.
Dr. William Johns, GDCHC’s Chief Medical Officer, said Dr. Michels-Ashwood “brings with her a number of years of experience working at community health centers elsewhere in the state. She has a great deal of knowledge in dealing with an underserved population. We warmly welcome her to our practice.”

Michels-Ashwood, who is bilingual in English and Spanish, has practiced in internal medicine since she completed her residency program in 1990.
“Internal medicine sees the patient as a whole person and I like that,” she said. “The best thing we can do for patients is listen to them. They all have a story to tell … It’s not just taking care of illnesses, it’s taking care of the patient as a whole.”

By becoming a doctor, she followed in the footsteps of several of her family members. “I have a lot of family members who are physicians and I always wanted to join them,” she said.
