Danbury Asthma Sufferers: Air Quality Alert Issued for Wednesday
Air pollution levels of ground-level ozone in the area are predicted to be unhealthy for sensitive groups on Wednesday.
DANBURY, CT — An air quality alert has been issued for the area on Wednesday.
Air pollution levels of ground-level ozone and/or particles are predicted to be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups."
"During the warm seasons, unhealthy ground-level ozone concentrations may cause a variety of respiratory problems including breathing difficulty, coughing, and throat irritation. In the cold season, particle pollution predominates," the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said, continuing, "Health effects such as: aggravated asthma, chronic bronchitis, nonfatal heart attacks, and even pre-mature death in people with heart and lung disease; have also been linked with prolonged exposure of particles."

The federal Environmental Protection Agency website airnow.gov states that active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors on Wednesday.
The American Lung Association states that when air quality level is orange or above, those in the risk groups should adjust plans for the day.

"Avoid prolonged vigorous activity outdoors. The health effects of pollution are worsened over extended periods of exposure, and by the deep, rapid breathing that accompanies exercise. Stay away from high-traffic areas, and do not exercise near those areas."
The Air Quality Index warns the public when air pollution is dangerous. "Keeping track of the current air quality information can help you take steps to protect yourself, children, and others from unhealthy levels of air pollution," according to the American Lung Association.
