Danbury Firefighters Free Toddler From 'Thomas' Toy

The procedure was nowhere near as simple as it looked.

DANBURY, CT -- Firefighters rescued a two-year-old boy Wednesday whose arm had gotten stuck inside a large plastic toy, the Danbury Fire Department is reporting.

On their Facebook page, FD officials noted that they are

"...called upon to rescue our citizens from various situations they may encounter. One scenario our fire personnel train for is referred to as 'Man In Machine' calls, where a person may be trapped with a limb stuck in a machine such as a lawn mower or snow blower. Today, our personnel did a modification of that type of rescue which we will call 'Tot in Toy.'"

Upon their arrival on the scene, first responders from Rescue 1 found that a two-year-old had stuck his arm into the smoke stack of a large "Thomas the Tank Engine" toy and was unable to free himself.

Following a few attempts to back the arm out, the firefighters had to resort to dismantling the toy, a 20-minute operation. The child's arm was eventually freed, and he was unharmed. In the course of the extrication firefighters learned that the lad had gotten his bracelet caught on an internal mechanism meant to launch a ball from the toy.
