Danbury Man Among Forbes' Top 500 Billionaires

Subway co-founder Peter Buck of Danbury ranks at No. 453 in the world of billionaires.

DANBURY, CT-- Forbes once again named Peter Buck, co-founder of Subway, as one of their top 500 billionaires in the world, according to Forbes magazine.

His real-time net worth is valued at $3.7 billion and he ranks No. 162 in the country of top billionaires.

There are 13 billionaires in Connecticut, eight of whom live in Greenwich.

Buck enjoys his anonymity, and rarely is public about anything he does. In 2014, he donated $30 million to Danbury Hospital. In 2004, he donated a 23.1-carat ruby to the Smithsonian, naming the stone for his late wife, Carmen Lucia.

Buck accumulated his wealth by advising his friend’s son, the late Fred DeLuca, that he should open a sub shop. Buck fronted the start-up capital get started. That sub shop is now known as Subway, the world’s largest restaurant chain. Subway began in Milford, Conn. but now spans nationwide and from Afghanistan to Zambia with more than 42,000 locations.

According to Forbes, “For our 30th annual guide to the world’s richest, we found 1,810 billionaires, down from a record 1,826 a year ago. Their aggregate net worth was $6.48 trillion, $570 billion less than last year. It was also the first time since 2010 that the average net worth of a billionaire dropped – it is now $3.6 billion, $300 million less than last year.”
