Danbury Police Warn of Phone Scam

Police are advising they have received an increase in complaints from residents regarding phone call scams.

DANBURY, CT — Police are advising they have received an increase in complaints from City residents regarding phone call scams.

The scam callers are pretending to be representatives of electrical utility Eversource, and threaten to turn off the resident's power immediately unless a payment is made over the phone.

Police are reminding customers on social media that:

  1. Eversource representatives never ask for instant payment in person or over the phone.
  2. Eversource representatives do not require the use of prepaid debit cards (such as Green Dot MoneyPak, Vanilla or Reloadit).
  3. Customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice via the U.S. mail which includes the actions they can take to maintain service.

Connecticut residents who receive such a call should hang up and contact Eversource directly at 800-286-2000.
