It’s hard to find any substantial explantation as to why so many people fight the lines to order Chinese food for the annual celebration (which is more increasingly a quiet night at home). Some go to restaurants, but most do the take-out route, often putting the order in days, or even a week, in advance to make sure that pu-pu platter is set to go.
It seems to be a New England tradition, and local residents are certainly familiar with scrambling to secure the best egg rolls and chow mien in town to help ring in the new year.
