Danbury Teacher Battles Cancer, Set for Life-Saving Surgery

DANBURY, CT — A Danbury High School teacher is scheduled for surgery next week, the latest battle in her war against a rare form of cancer.

Susan Schullery, who teaches business and peer leadership at the school, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in her ovaries, bladder and peritoneal wall in September. She began chemotherapy and had her ovaries removed, but doctors still have not determined the specific type of cancer affecting her.

Schullery continued to teach during the fall semester while undergoing chemo to keep the disease from spreading. In January, she began the preparation for the hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy surgery needed to save her life, scheduled for Washington D.C. next week.

A GoFundMe page was established for Schullery to offset the costs associated with the out-of-state travel for oncology consultations, and medical and drug treatment required in the run-up for the surgery. The campaign has raised $53,714 in its first 24 days, more than doubling its initial goal.
