False Gun Report Triggered SWAT Response In Danbury Monday, Police Say

DANBURY, CT — A report that a man had a gun during a domestic disturbance prompted a SWAT response and road closure in Danbury before investigators determined no firearm was involved, according to police.

The Danbury Police Department initially alerted the public Monday that officers were investigating a domestic violence incident involving a firearm and identified Alvaro Matias, a 36-year-old Bethel resident, as a person of interest.

The department later announced that Matias had turned himself in.

Police spokesman Mark Williams said the incident began as a domestic disturbance in the area of Stuart Drive.

According to Williams, Yomally Melo — a 35-year-old Danbury woman — reported that Matias had a gun and provided other information that was later contradicted by video evidence recovered during the investigation.

Williams said the information prompted a SWAT callout and road closure and investigators did not locate a firearm.

Matias was charged with interfering with an officer and second-degree breach of peace. Melo was charged with interfering with an officer, second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree breach of peace.

Police said Matias reported an injury during the incident.
