DANBURY, CT-- Sports Authority filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Wednesday and announced that they will be closing more than 100 of their 450 stores nationwide, including one in Danbury.
A representative with Sports Authority said they could not comment on the case and directed Patch to Kurtzman, Cason Consultants who reported on their website that the company filed a court document on March 2, 2016, for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.
Michael Foss, Chief Executive Officer, posted a letter on their website on March 2, 2016 stating in part:
"During the past several months, we have been working very hard to adapt our business to better meet the needs of our customers. With these goals in mind, we have decided to utilize the Chapter 11 process to implement a financial and operational restructuring that we believe is necessary to help us become an even better place for our customers to shop for sporting goods....we have identified approximately 140 stores that we intend to close or sell in the coming months. This was a tough decision to make, but we believe it was a necessary step in our plan to make Sports Authority an even better partner for our customers. The store closings will occur over the next three months."
Three Connecticut stores will close, including the Danbury store located at 13 Sugar Hollow Road, the Bridgeport store located at 4543 Main Street and North Haven, located at 180 Universal Drive North.
Foss said that there will not be any impact on gift card balances or a customer's ability to use gift cards at the remaining stores or online.
