Immaculate, Danbury Win Team Cross Country Titles

The Mustangs swept the Class SS races, while the Hatter girls prevailed in Class LL Friday at Wickham Park.

MANCHESTER, CT — The city of Danbury has plenty of reason to celebrate this weekend, as three of its high school cross country teams emerged victorious from the state championship meets at Wickham Park Friday.

Immaculate won both the boys and girls races in Class SS. The boys edged East Catholic, 60 to 68, while the girls had an easier time, compiling 31 points to 78 for Haddam-Killingworth.

A total of 11 Mustangs turned in top 25 finishes. For the boys, Drew Mitchell led in eighth place, followed by Ryan McNerney (10), James Sullivan (13), Parker McKenzie (14) and Logan Plaisted (15). The top girls finisher was Angela Saidman (3), followed by Ailene Doherty (4), Taylor Mascetta (6), Kaitlyn Segreti (7), Natalie Dudas (11) and Christina Carboni (24).

Not to be outdone, Danbury High School won its first girls LL championship since 2002, collecting 56 points to 97 for runner-up Glastonbury. Lauren Moore placed second overall, just two seconds behind winner Mari Noble of Greenwich, while Daniella Grullon Pena (9), Alexandra Chakar (12), Meilee Kry (16) and Cassandra Sturdevant (17) also turned in top 20 performances.

The Hatter boys were third in Class LL, paced by Malcolm Going (12), Jacob Hefele (22) and Jack Watson (25).

The top two teams and 12 individuals from each class advance to the State Open, scheduled for Nov. 2, also at Wickham Park.
