Immaculate Struggles Continue

Immaculate falls to New Fairfield, looks for a win on Saturday.

Two winless varsity football teams met at Immaculate High School on Saturday when the Mustangs played host to the New Fairfield Rebels.

The Rebels dominated the first half of the game, jumping out to an early 14-0 lead, and they were sitting comfortably at halftime with the two-touchdown cushion. Not for long. The Mustangs' effort was unwavering, and they stormed into the third quarter and scored two quick touchdowns to tie the game at 14.

"We fell behind 14-0, and with the way our season's been going, anyone's going to expect us to fold it in there," said Immaculate Head Coach Gary Bellagamba after the game. "But we didn't, and I'm proud of my boys."

Immaculate pieced together an impressive drive late in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on several key New Fairfield penalties. With under a minute and a half to go, the Mustangs punched the ball into the end zone on a run from quarterback Greg Wax. Rather than tie the game with a PAT, Bellgamba decided to go for two and the win.

Wax's pass into the flats fell incomplete after being tipped by a Rebel linebacker. New Fairfield took over after the ensuing kickoff and ran out the clock. "We had a good play called, we got the look we wanted, and their outside linebacker made a good play," said Bellagamba.

Immaculate's record falls to 0-5 on the season with the loss. The Mustangs will look to get their first win of the season on Saturday when they play host to rival Bethel High School. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Immaculate High School. "The kids get pumped up," Bellagamba said. "Bethel's a fine football team, and a well-coached football team."
