UPDATE: Police Used Taser After Driver Tried to Run Down CT State Trooper

The driver sped off through several towns before crashing in New Milford.

State Police have arrested a driver who they say led Connecticut State Troopers on a chase from Interstate 84 in Newtown to Route 7 in New Milford early Friday, nearly running over one of them and prompting police to fire a gun.

According to NBC Connecticut, Kenneth Lyden, 32, of Wolcott, has been charged with criminal attempt at first-degree assault, two counts of assault on an officer, reckless endangerment, interfering with an officer, engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving and misuse of license plates.

Connecticut State Troopers attempted to stop a speeding motor vehicle but the operator refused to stop, westbound I-84 between Exits 11 and 10, according to state police spokeswoman Trooper 1st Class Kelly Grant.

It was Exit 6 where troopers attempted to deploy stop sticks. “The operator drove off the roadway at a trooper, who discharged a round from his duty weapon,” Grant said. The gunshot “struck the vehicle, no injuries to operator, trooper, or civilians,” according to Grant.

The driver exited the highway at Exit 6 and continued “through several towns where it crashed at Routes 7 and 37 in New Milford.” The incident began around 5:30 a.m.

The driver was taken into custody and brought to Danbury Hospital for evaluation. Troopers also were evaluated but no injuries to them were reported, Grant said.

The identity of the driver and charges are pending. Both Route 7 and I-84 were reopened to traffic about two hours after the incident.

NBC Connecticut reports the incident involved Connecticut State Police attempting to stop a suspected drunk driver on I-84.

The driver reportedly used his vehicle to try and hit a trooper who fired his gun at the driver. The driver fled the scene and eventually crashed his vehicle at the intersection of Routes 7 and 37 in New Milford, according to NBC Connecticut’s Heidi Voight.

I-84 has been reopened to traffic.

According to WTNH, state police used stop sticks in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the driver. The incident began around 5:30 a.m., and ended with the crash on Route 7 which has been reopened to traffic.

The driver was taken to Danbury Hospital, according to WTNH.

A police investigation has closed Route 7 in New Milford in both directions and one westbound lane of I-84 in Danbury on Friday morning, according to reports.

Route 7 is closed indefinitely between Route 37, also known as Sherman Road, and Boardman Road, according to WFSB. A crash also closed the westbound right lane of Interstate 84 between exits 5 and 7, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

According to WFSB, state police tried to stop a motor vehicle whose driver sped away from troopers and then crashed in the area of Route 7 near Route 37.
