Red Cross Trains Habitat Volunteers on Fire Safety

Danbury, CT - 05/13/19: The American Red Cross met with Housatonic Habit for Humanity volunteers at 51 Austin St., in Danbury to present on Fire Safety and Smoke Alarm Installation. Claudia Berry, T5 Home Fire Preparedness Campaign Coordinator of the Red Cross, presented on the importance of practicing fire safety in homes and the benefit of developing a family disaster plan to avoid additional losses. Red Cross instructor Martin Gross reviewed proper smoke alarm installation. He advised that smoke alarms should be installed on every level of each home, including the basement. He recommended that smoke alarms be replaced every ten years.

The Red Cross donated 50 smoke alarms to Housatonic Habitat. The donated alarms will be installed in Habitat-affiliated homes or in the homes of local seniors through the “Brush with Kindness” program which helps seniors to age in place. The Red Cross will also install smoke alarms in any home for free. Stop by their booth at Habitat’s Customer Appreciation Event on June 1 at 51 Austin St. to sign up for the free smoke alarm installation.
