Walgreens, 4 More Danbury Kitchens, Fail Health Inspection

Health inspectors rate commercial kitchens monthly on a 100-point scale.

DANBURY, CT — Five food service establishments in Danbury failed health inspections in May, according to the city's Department of Health and Human Services.

The biggest name on the list was Walgreen's, which earned an automatic failure because it had food that wasn’t properly protected from contamination or spoilage. Located at 75 Main Street and best known as a dispenser of prescription drugs, the establishment passed its re-inspection and is open for business.

The other four kitchens that failed their health inspections in May are Mill Plain Diner at 14 Mill Plain Road, Family Dollar at 199 Main Street, Ichiro at 69 Newtown Road and Kennedy’s Fried Chicken at 292 Main Street. All have since re-opened after passing new inspections.

Health inspectors rate commercial kitchens monthly on a 100-point scale in areas such as the availability of suitable hand cleaners and dry towels, whether potentially hazardous food is properly thawed, whether the mats are clean and in good repair, and dozens more. A restaurant must score 80 points or better to pass. Some violations, such as those surrounding the temperature at which food is stored, can result in automatic failures.

Restaurants that fail inspection are typically given 24 hours to remedy their problems and must pay a $250 fine. All Danbury restaurants that failed in April have since passed re-inspection and are back in business.
