DANBURY, CT — The National Weather Service Skywarn Spotter Program will hold a free training for individuals interested in becoming weather spotters at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the Student Center Theater on the Western Connecticut State University Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The workshop will provide instruction about how to observe and report specific types of clouds that form before severe weather such as hail, high winds or a tornado develops. The two-and-a-half hour class is open to the public, emergency managers, first responders, amateur radio operators, teachers and students at the 8th-grade level and above.
WCSU Professor of Biological and Environmental Sciences Dr. Dora Pinou said, “Early detection is key for developing a climate-resilient community, and the National Weather Service relies on spotters to help track storms.”
The training also will provide safety tips to prepare for and respond to flash floods, severe thunderstorms and lightning. It is sponsored by Praxair, the NOAA B-Wet program and the WCSU Meteorology program. Attendees will receive a Spotter ID Card upon completion of the class.
