Woman's Club of Danbury/New Fairfield (WCDNF) Supports Danbury's Westside Academy

The members of WCDNF donated money to support the literary work of students at the Danbury Westside Academy.

"Between the Covers", a book club of the Woman's Club of Danbury/New Fairfield, meets monthly to discuss current literature. This group organizes an annual book sale at the March WCDNF meeting. Club members are asked to donate up to five books which are then sold at reduced prices to fellow club members. Books that are not sold are donated to local libraries. The proceeds from this sale help to support local programs that promote literacy.

This year, the book club chose to donate the $301 raised at the book sale to Danbury's Westside Middle School Academy. Students at the school publish an Art and Literacy Magazine entitled, "Westside Warriors". This publication includes student work of fiction and non-fiction articles, poetry, digital art, wildlife art, landscape, cartooning and photography. The students on the magazine staff meet during the year for workshops with professionals to hone their skills and to prepare the publication for printing. Their work is also submitted to the Connecticut Students' Writing Contest and Scholastic Magazine. Several of their submissions have been recognized for awards.

The money donated by the WCDNF Book Group to the "Westside Warriors" magazine will be used by the school to help defray the printing costs of the publication which is available in the school's library as well as in the Danbury Public Library. Copies are also available for parents and the public to purchase. The Woman's Club of Danbury/New Fairfield is proud to support the literary and artistic work of these students and encourage them in their artistic endeavors.
