At approximately midnight Friday, police received a report that a late-model Nissan Rogue traveling eastbound on Tokeneke Road crossed into the westbound lane, left the roadway, stuck a fence and then plummeted into Five Mile River where it joins with Long Island Sound, police said.

The vehicle was found almost fully submerged, and officers located debris from the crash floating toward Long Island Sound in an outgoing tide, police said.

An occupant from the SUV was located roughly 100 yards from the crash site floating face down in the outgoing current, police said.

Two Darien police officers immediately jumped into the water and brought the unresponsive person to a nearby private dock and rendered lifesaving aid.

Members of the Darien Fire Department utilized cold water gear and began searching for additional people.

Shortly after, fire units found a second person in the submerged SUV who was rescued and turned over to Emergency Medical Services personnel for treatment, police noted. The person was taken to an area hospital but they were later pronounced dead.

Over the next few hours, first responders from various local agencies in Norwalk, Stamford Greenwich and the United States Coast Guard searched for additional victims.

"At this time, there is no indication that there are any additional victims nor any indication that any other vehicle was involved in this collision," Darien police said in a news release.

The two Darien police officers who jumped into the water to rescue the first victim are currently being treated at an area hospital for injuries and exposure, police added. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Police said the crash remains under investigation, and no further information will be released at this time.
