Big Reward Offered For Info On Gun Used In Unsolved Killing Of Darien Police Officer

Darien Police Officer Kenneth Bateman was shot and killed while responding to a report of a break-in at a local restaurant on May 31, 1981.

DARIEN, CT — A $50,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the identification and recovery of the gun used in the unsolved killing of Darien Police Officer Kenneth Bateman, who was shot and killed on May 31, 1981, in the line of duty at the age of 34.

The Darien Police Department announced the reward Friday afternoon, which is in addition to the $100,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Bateman's death.

"Upon recovery of the involved firearm, a forensic analysis will be conducted and the $50,000 reward will be paid upon the subsequent confirmation of its link to the crime," police said in a news release. "We urge anyone with credible information about the firearm to come forward, as your assistance is crucial in bringing justice to Officer Bateman's family and holding those responsible for his death accountable."

Bateman responded to a reported break-in at a restaurant near the Norwalk city line at approximately 3 a.m. on May 31, 1981. While waiting for backup, Bateman encountered a suspect fleeing the scene, and a shootout ensued, police said. Bateman was wounded and later died from his injuries.
