A gas tax would hit an already stretched consumer very hard. Gas prices have risen because of Iraq and the Middle East is unlikely to calm down. Food prices are also rising and are a serious burden. There is a strong case for inflation being deliberately under reported but that is another story. The real issue going forward is that the country is going broke. The Highway Trust Fund, Amtrak and the Post Office among many others are going broke. We cannot fund our entitlements. We have been on a debt binge for 30 years. Things will get very painful.
