Alex Ostberg, a Darien High runner and National 5,000-meter champion, was named Darien’s Sports Person of the Year, a title awarded by the Fairfield County Sports Commission.

The commission names a winner from each of the 15 communities it serves. The recipients of the Sports Person of the Year title were “deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from Aug. 2013-Aug. 2014,” as determined by a local town representative of the commission, according to a news release.

Ostberg and the other honorees are invited to the 10th anniversary Sports Night awards dinner, held on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.

New this year, Newton will also have an annual Sports Person of the Year, established by the commission as part of an alliance with the Newtown Youth Academy Sports and Fitness Center.
