Thriving Youth Darien, Police Launch Campaign To Help Prevent Underage Drinking

The campaign is launching this spring with participating Darien liquor stores.

DARIEN, CT — Thriving Youth Darien and the Darien Police Department have launched a community campaign aimed at preventing underage drinking by encouraging residents to safely store alcohol in their homes.

The Liquor Lock Sticker Campaign partners with local liquor retailers to distribute free stickers and educational materials focused on reducing youth access to alcohol, which organizers said often comes from home or social sources rather than stores.

The stickers are designed to seal opened bottles so residents can monitor whether alcohol has been accessed.

According to Thriving Youth Darien’s 2025 Youth Survey, about one in four Darien high school students reported drinking alcohol in the past month.

By senior year, nearly half reported drinking, rates the organization said are higher than regional, state and national averages based on the 2023 CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

"This campaign is about empowering adults with simple, practical steps they can take to reduce access to alcohol at home," said Sarah McCarty, program director of Thriving Youth Darien, in a news release. "Something as small as securing alcohol or setting clear expectations can make a meaningful difference in delaying a young person’s first drink."

Participating retailers include Sipstirs, Leary's Liquor Cabinet and Heights Wine & Spirits.

The stores will display countertop stands with Liquor Lock stickers and brochures containing information about safe alcohol storage, Connecticut’s social host law and the health risks associated with underage drinking.

"Preventing underage drinking is a shared responsibility," said Det. Joseph Cusano of the Darien Police Department’s Youth Division. "We’re proud to partner on this initiative and support efforts that help keep youth safe in our community."

The campaign also highlights research showing that delaying alcohol use can reduce the likelihood of long-term effects on memory, decision-making and emotional health.

Thriving Youth Darien encouraged residents to store alcohol securely, monitor supplies and communicate clear expectations with young people.

The stickers and educational materials are expected to begin appearing in participating Darien liquor stores this spring.
