Richard Allen Coutermash

Richard "Coot" Coutermash, a talented craftsman, avid outdoorsman, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at his home in Darien, Connecticut, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief battle with cancer.He was born on June 29, 1957 in Stamford, CT to Allen Coutermash and Patricia Flaherty Coutermash.

Born with a natural eye for design and a dedicated work ethic, Rich was the proud owner and operator of Coutermash Construction. He took immense pride in his work, and his natural affinity for landscape design and the many homes he built and remodeled.

In his youth, Rich shared his love for the winter slopes as a member of the Okemo Mountain Ski Patrol. The family home on the Sachem Trail of Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, Vermont, served as a favorite gathering spot for family and friends for many years, anchoring countless memories. Beyond the ski trails, Rich lived life to the fullest. He was deeply passionate about riding his Harley Davidson, bow hunting, photography, boating, and water skiing.

Rich was also an active, long-standing member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles (Eagles Club of Stamford, CT), where he forged deep, lasting friendships. Known for his generous spirit, Coot was the kind of man who would freely lend his time to help anyone in need.

He was predeceased by his father, Allen Ray Coutermash; his brother, Ray Allen Coutermash; and his nephew, Allen Ray Coutermash.

Rich’s legacy lives on through his daughter, Emma O'Neil Coutermash, and her mother, Gigi Tuthill Clifford. He is also survived by his mother, Patricia Flaherty Coutermash; his sister, Dawn Christensen; his niece, Amber Ray Coutermash, and her children, Oliver and Adeline; and his nephew, Chase Christensen.
