DARIEN, CT — A section of Great Island has been temporarily blocked off due to the presence of a mother coyote and her six pups, according to an advisory from Darien's animal control that was shared by police.

"The mother coyote is exhibiting protective behavior toward her young, and for the safety of both the public and the animals, no one should enter the restricted area," the advisory said. "Please remember that Great Island is closed to public access during daytime hours."

Hours at Great Island are after 4 p.m. on weekdays, and from dawn to dusk on weekends.

The advisory noted that despite the closure, individuals have been seen walking in the area and walking their dogs.

Photos shared by police show paved paths blocked off by cones and yellow caution tape.

"Entering closed areas increases the risk of a negative encounter with wildlife and can cause unnecessary stress to the animals," the advisory continued. "We ask all residents to respect posted closures and avoid the area entirely until further notice. Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep our community and local wildlife safe."

Last year, a section of the bridle trail was temporarily closed for several months after a pair of bald eagles were spotted nesting in the area.
