DARIEN, CT — The Darien Police Department is urging students and families to prioritize e-bike safety as school is set to begin on Aug. 26.
The department noted that preliminary Connecticut data reports there were six fatalities, 21 serious injuries and 102 minor injuries related to e-bikes in 2025.
"While Darien has not experienced a catastrophic E-bike crash, officers continue to observe unsafe riding behaviors," police said.
Officers have observed traffic violations and unsafe roadway use; stop sign and traffic light violations; unsafe roadway crossings; riding on sidewalks; speeding and reckless behavior; wheelies and riding without lights; near-miss collisions; distraction and unsafe riding practices; cellphone use and earbuds while riding; multiple riders on one e-bike; and riding without helmets.
"As students return to school, please slow down, stay alert, follow all traffic laws, and wear a properly fitted helmet every ride," police said. "Parents and guardians: please discuss safe riding habits with your children before they head out."
