DARIEN, CT — Local veterans of the Korean War and Vietnam War will be honored in Darien during a special ceremony that's scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. at the Mather Center Cafe.

First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky shared details of the event during Monday's virtual Board of Selectmen meeting, which included a brief visit from Monuments & Ceremonies Commission Chair Sueann Schorr.

Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz's office has partnered with the Connecticut Department of Veterans to visit municipalities around the state to honor local veterans, notably those who served during the Korean War, Vietnam War and World War II eras.

Bysiewicz provides veterans with pins and official certificates of appreciation from the state.

"Darien is now on the list for having one of those ceremonies," Zagrodzky said, noting the town has been working on setting up the event for over a year.

"It's just come together and I'm looking forward to it. I'm grateful to [the lieutenant governor] for this particular initiative," Zagrodzky said.

Invitations have gone out from the First Selectman's Office to local Korean and Vietnam-era veterans, Zagrodzky said.

"We're also inviting veterans more broadly to come to this and hope to have a good turnout, but it will be a nice ceremony, a catered event, singing the national anthem, the color guard," Zagrodzky said

He added he plans to reach out to the Monuments & Ceremonies Commission to coordinate logistics.

Monday's Board of Selectmen meeting is available to watch on demand on DarienTV.
