DARIEN, CT — A Weathersfield man was arrested late last month in connection with an identity theft scheme from over six years ago, according to Darien police.
Ruben Martinez, 57, faces two counts of third-degree identity theft.
On Feb. 8, 2020, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Darien Police Department Detective Division was notified by the Watertown Police Department about an arrest connected to vehicles obtained using fraudulent identification in another person's name, police said.
Darien detectives identified evidence indicating that bank accounts had also been opened in Darien under that same identity at two banks, police said.
During a follow-up investigation, detectives obtained court-authorized bank records and reviewed related surveillance video, which identified Martinez, police noted.
An arrest warrant was later issued for Martinez, who was taken into custody in the early morning hours of Sept. 25 by Connecticut State Police.
Martinez was unable to post a $20,000 bond, police said.
