DARIEN, CT — The Darien Department of Public Works will begin its 2026 leaf pickup program Nov. 2, with three collections scheduled on each side of the railroad tracks.
The pickup schedule is:
The dates listed are start dates, DPW noted.
Bagged leaves should be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled start date. Once leaves have been collected, crews will not return until the next scheduled pickup.
Leaves must be placed in paper bags. Loose leaves and leaves in plastic bags will not be collected. Bags must contain only leaves; those containing brush, grass clippings, garbage or other materials will not be collected.
Residents can check local hardware stores, big-box stores and supermarkets for paper bags. Bags do not need to be marked 100 percent biodegradable, provided they are clearly made of paper.
Paper bags commonly purchased from suppliers such as Home Depot, Lowe's and Ring's End Lumber will be collected.
Participation is optional, and residents are encouraged to compost leaves on their property.
Collection is limited to public roads. Residents of private roads should arrange their own leaf collection. Residents with the proper permit may also dispose of leaves at the Darien Transfer Station.
The schedule is subject to minor variations because of leaf volume, snowstorms or other unforeseen circumstances, according to DPW. No additional information will be available about specific pickup times.
