Fairfield County’s NUTMEG CURLING CLUB is offering its annual “Learn to Curl” sessions on TUESDAY, October 11th, THURSDAY, October 13th at 7:00 and 8:30 PM and Sunday, October 16th at 9:30 am. It’s a great chance for everyone to try their hand at this friendly and fascinating game.  The cost is $30 per person.

Located just off Route 8 next to Bridgeport’s Wonderland of Ice, the club has over 190 members, many of whom tried curling for the first time at past “Learn to Curl” sessions.  Everyone interested is encouraged to sign up at www.nutmegcurling.com and take advantage of this opportunity to have fun, meet people, and discover what makes this classic game so unique and popular. Trained instructors will be on hand to answer questions, explain the game and give all participants a chance to get out onto the ice and “throw” a stone. The club will provide all necessary equipment at the Learn to Curl; participants should plan to wear rubber soled shoes like sneakers and loose, warm clothing.

Children over 15 are welcome along with parents; the club sponsors a regular “junior curling” league for young people and it’s a terrific way for them to stay active in the winter in an environment that fosters team play and good sportsmanship.

What is curling?  A classic game that most people recognize from TV coverage of the winter Olympics, curling is played on specially prepared ice by teams of four people. Players compete to slide circular stones down the ice toward a bulls-eye shaped target; players score points by getting their stones closest to the center of the target. Other players trail each shot, using special “brooms” to rub the ice in front of stone in order to control its speed and direction.

There are over 14,000 individual curlers in approximately 190 curling clubs in the US, and the game is played all over the world, including Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Japan and Turkey. Though it is highly competitive and requires great skill at the professional level, curling is also a game that’s enjoyed by amateurs of all abilities in local rinks and leagues. One thing curling is known for all over the world is its friendly, social quality. After each game, it’s customary for players from both teams sit down together to enjoy a beverage and get to know each other.
