Apparent Attempt to Blow up Darien Mailbox Results in Charred Mail

The extent of damage was unclear in a police report, but the vandalism charred mail inside.

Mail inside a mailbox for a home on Stephen Mather Road was found charred on Sunday, Aug. 3, apparently from explosive fireworks put in the box, Darien police were told.

A plastic “sleeve” (a device that can be pulled out of the mailbox to get mail) was damaged by the smoke and fire, and police officers found what seemed to be remains of a firecracker inside the mailbox, police said.

Police said it seemed someone tried to blow up the mailbox with the firecracker. The explosion would have taken place sometime between 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, and 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3.

The value of the damaged items was not given in the police report.
