DARIEN, CT — In an effort to foster the department's slogan of "Pride in Excellence," the Darien Police Department will sponsor an opportunity for members of the community to become acquainted with the roles and responsibilities of the men and women in uniform.
Darien’s Citizen’s Police Academy brings the police and the community closer together in a setting that offers a sample of police training to each participant. The academy will run training sessions from Nov. 30 to Jan. 11.

Participants receive six training sessions that will be approximately two hours. They will learn about the many varied functions of law enforcement. Participants will experience some of the highlights of police training and will be exposed to the operations of the department.
Presentations will include the basics of criminal law, search and seizure, patrol tactics, modified firearm training, crime scene processing, and an introduction to the department’s Special Operations Unit.

Academy participants are offered an opportunity to network with command staff, patrol officers and training personnel. Sessions will be hosted in a safe, controlled, and entertaining training environment.
Participants will leave this training with a greater understanding of how the DPD provides service to the communities in which they live to make the town safe.
"This proactive approach to policing will be critical in turning Darien PD’s stakeholders into brand advocates, and ambassadors for the agency. This program is not an accredited certification course to become a sworn police officer," the department said in a news release.
