Checks Stolen From Mail At Darien Post Office, Cops Say

The thefts were reported separately, according to police.

DARIEN, CT — Thousands of dollars were scammed from the bank accounts of victims who had mailed checks from the Darien Post Office on Corbin Drive earlier this month, only to have the checks stolen, according to Darien police.

In the first case, $4,300 was reportedly stolen out the account of one person who had mailed a check for $275 from a receptacle at the facility on Jan. 13.

"On January 19th, 2019 the complainant noticed a check had been cashed against their account in the amount of $4,300," stated Darien Police Det. James Palmieri. "The image of the cashed check showed the above mentioned check had been altered and made out to an individuals name in the amount of $4,300."

The second case involved a check for $500, which also was mailed from facility on Jan. 13. This time the victim was scammed for $4,750.50 after the thief altered the stolen check.
