DAR: Darien’s DAR Asks the Public to Remember Constitution Week: September 17-23, 2019
During the week of September 17-23, members of Darien’s Good Wife’s River Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution encourage the public to remember Constitution Week, one of our country’s least known official observances. The U.S. Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity throughout history of Americans to maintain their liberties and freedom, and to ensure those inalienable rights to every American. The Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life. Constitution Week is a great time to learn more about this important document and celebrate the freedoms it gave us by studying historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787. Connecticut’s official nickname is “The Constitution State,” because in 1639, it was the first state to adopt a representative form of government called The Fundamental Orders based on democratic principles. These orders are said to be the first written Constitution in the United States. The United States Constitution was then signed 148 years later on Sept. 17, 1787. The DAR petitioned the U.S. Congress and on August 2, 1956, then President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Public Law No. 915 which set aside a week annually to be dedicated to the study of the United States Constitution. Today, the Constitution stands as an icon of freedom for people around the
world. The DAR is the largest women’s patriotic organization in the world with over 175,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters in all 50 states and 13 foreign countries. For information about the local Chapter, call 203-656-0857, or email: Harley87dp@yahoo.com.
