Why are you seeking this office?

I am a strong supporter of public education and believe deeply in the importance of maintaining excellent public schools in Darien. As a mother of four, I've seen first hand how our district impacts individual students.

My perspective extends well beyond my own children. I've spent more than a decade in PTO leadership roles within our schools, including Tokeneke, Middlesex Middle School, and three years as the Council of Darien School Parent Co-Chair, where I've had the opportunity to work with and advocate for students and families across the district.

I've also attended nearly every Board of Education meeting since 2021, giving me a deep understanding of how our district works, the issues facing our schools, and the responsibilities of the Board.

After years of advocating for our schools from the community side of the table, I believe I have the experience and knowledge to serve our students and families as a member of the Board of Education.

The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ____, and this is what I intend to do about it:

The single most pressing issue facing our district is increasing pressure on the school budget. With significant town debt obligations from recent school renovations and Great Island, along with the need to renovate Middlesex Middle School in the coming years, careful financial planning will be more important than ever.

The best way to manage these pressures without compromising student programming and educational experiences is through thoughtful and strategic long-term planning. We need to examine capital investments and district operations to identify efficiencies, plan for future needs, and make fiscally responsible decisions.

This is where my experience matters. Board members who understand district operations, the history behind past decisions, and the challenges ahead are best equipped to make informed, strategic decisions that maintain strong schools but are also responsible with taxpayer dollars.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

The most significant difference is the depth of my direct experience with Darien schools and the Board of Education.

Through over more than a decade of dedicated volunteerism, I've worked closely with district administrators, parent leaders across all seven schools, special education leadership, community organizations, and elected town officials.

These experiences have given me extensive knowledge of our district's operations, of the Board's responsibilities and of the needs of both our students and the broader community.

While professional and corporate experience can bring valuable skills to the Board, it cannot substitute for firsthand knowledge gained through years of attending BOE meetings, engaging with families, and being directly involved in the work of our schools. There is no shortcut to that kind of institutional knowledge, and it's the experience I would bring to the Board from day one.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

  • Evaluating Classroom Technology: I strongly support the district's recent efforts to reduce unnecessary screen time and return to more traditional, hands-on learning in grades K–8. I believe we need to continue evaluating technology use across all grade levels, including Darien High School, to ensure it is age-appropriate and provides meaningful educational value and not simply used because it’s available.
  • MMS Renovation: With MMS operating above its intended capacity and major building systems aging, we need to plan carefully for its renovation. That means addressing modern educational needs, anticipating future enrollment, and making fiscally responsible decisions that serve both students and taxpayers.
  • Literacy Instruction: With a new K–3 literacy curriculum in place, we need to identify and address foundational literacy gaps among older students who may have missed critical phonics instruction. The return to more traditional, less screen-dependent learning is also a positive step toward strengthening literacy skills.
  • Evaluating the MMS Team Model: As larger grades move into MMS over the next few years, we need to evaluate the current state of the team model and ensure it is being used to its fullest potential. That means carefully considering enrollment projections, class sizes, staffing, and the resources needed to preserve the benefits of the team structure.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

My record of leadership, advocacy, and collaboration demonstrates my ability to serve effectively on the Board. Through years of leadership roles, I've built relationships across our schools and town government, navigated complex issues, and advocated for students and families. Combined with my professional background as a former CPA at Ernst & Young, I bring institutional knowledge and financial expertise to make informed and responsible decisions for our schools and community.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

The best advice I’ve ever received is to be authentic. Be yourself - stay true to your values. People may not always agree with you, but they’ll respect you for being authentic.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

As a mom of four and someone who has spent more than a decade working with families across our district, this race is deeply personal to me. I've seen firsthand that every student's educational journey is different and I believe our schools must recognize each student's strengths, support their challenges, and help them succeed on their own path. I'm running for the Board of Education because I want a seat at the table to help ensure our district delivers on that promise for every student.
