Darien 2nd-Grader Advocates for Humane Treatment of Horses

Darien 2nd-grader Lucie Bohnsack penned a letter to the editor about what people can do to give horses a second chance.

Lucie Bohnsack, a Darien 2nd-grader, recently tried to adopt a horse. Instead, she got an amazing trip to the Black Beauty Ranch to see the largest animal sanctuary in the world. She was inspired by the trip to advocate for the rescue of horses kept in inhumane conditions.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to tell you that I think we need to stop horses from being killed in slaughter houses.

One reason is that horses are killed for meat. It is not good for people who eat them. For example, the antibiotics that are given to the horse are not good for people. I used to love meat, but I saw how cruel this was I have been a vegetarian since November 2014 and I was born in November 2006.

The second reason it is hurtful to send horses in trucks to Canada and Mexico. The trucks are over crowded and the horses do not get food or water for more than 24 hours. People at the Black Beauty Ranch in Texas told me that there were 40 donkeys on a truck and only 20 survived. There was one horse in quarantine. They did not name it yet and they named it after me, Lucie.

And the last reason is it is better to give a horse a second chance than to ill it. The Black Beauty Ranch, which is the biggest sanctuary for animals in the whole entire world took a sick horse named Leo in and made him better. Then someone adopted him.

Can we please stop those saughter houses? I am one small voice in the world, but can you please listen. This is what you can do. Visit www.humanesociety.org for more information and visit www.blackbeautyranch.org to donate and support the horses enjoying a second chance at the Black Beauty Ranch.

From,

Lucie Bohnsack
