Darien Board Of Education Appoints New Member

A vacancy on the board opened up in September following the resignation of Republican Tara Wurm.

DARIEN, CT — The Darien Board of Education last week appointed Robin Nelson, a longtime community volunteer, to fill the vacancy left by Tara Wurm who resigned in September.

A Republican, Nelson has served on the board of The Darien Foundation for several years. She has also been the co-chair of the Council of Darien School Parents and treasurer of two local nonprofits and helped spearhead a $213,000 robotics grant for the school district.

Nelson will be sworn in soon and seated for the next regularly scheduled board of education meeting on Oct. 10. Her term will run through November 2024.

"She's been a diehard volunteer in her volunteer career here in Darien, and we welcome her to the board in short order," said board Chair David Dineen last week. "I think she'll become a very productive member of this very productive board."

The board accepted Wurm's resignation last month. Any replacement on the board must be from the same political party as the member who resigned.

Dineen said seven candidates were interviewed, and he thanked them for stepping up and encouraged them to stay involved in community happenings.

"I will say that it was a great group of candidates. They were great interviews, people that are committed to the passion and dedication of continuing to drive an incredible education system in the district," Dineen said. "As I've always said, this town is a leader in volunteerism and we cannot do all the hard work on these boards without people stepping up with their time and knowledge that enable us to have a high-performing leading district in the state."
