Darien Boys Soccer Blanks North Haven, 3-0

Matthew Collier, Geoffrey Hubbard, and Ben Highton scored for the Blue Wave, who will host archrival New Canaan in the second round on Monday.

Matthew Collier, Geoffrey Hubbard, and Ben Highton scored Friday as the Darien boys soccer team opened play in the Class L state tournament with a 3-0 victory over No. 28 seed North Haven.

The win sets up a second-round showdown on Monday against archival New Canaan, the defending state champion. The 12th-seeded Rams advanced with a 3-0 victory over No. 21 Lyman Hall.

Monday's clash will be played in Darien at 2 p.m. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 10.

On Friday, the fifth-seeded Blue Wave (13-3-3) took a 1-0 lead on Collier's goal with under 24 minutes remaining in the first half.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Hubbard scored on a header to  make it 2-0. Highton completed the scoring just under seven minutes.

Darien goalkeepers Jack Fisher (4) and Jeff Sload (2) combined for six saves to record the shutout.

North Haven finished the year at 5-8-4.
