Applications Required For Darien Tax Collection Deferment: UPDATE

Residents can apply to pay their property tax bills due in April instead of January.

Editor's Note: Darien Tax Collector Kathy Larkins issued the following clarification Tuesday concerning the tax deferment effort to reiterate that residents need to apply for the program:

In order to clarify previously misleading published headlines, Tax Collector Kathy Larkins stated that taxpayers must file an application with the Darien Tax Collector’s Office in order to get extended time to pay the January 2021 property taxes. This application may be found on the Tax Collector’s page on the Town of Darien website (www.darienct.gov) and requires applicants to attest to a loss of income as a result of COVID-19. Landlords, in addition to the application, are required to provide documentation proving property has suffered a significant revenue decline or documentation proving commensurate forbearance was offered to the tenants or lessees. Questions should be directed to Kathy Larkins.

DARIEN, CT — Darien taxpayers, residents, nonprofits and businesses can apply to delay paying their taxes due to the impact of the coronavirus, following a resolution adopted by the Representative Town Meeting on Monday, announced First Selectman Jayme Stevenson and Tax Collector Kathy Larkins.

The RTM adopted resolution 20-27 which approved the extended benefits as per Governor Lamont’s Executive Order 9R as it applies to tax deadlines and collection efforts for tax bills due and payable on Jan. 1, 2021, with eligibility criteria as set forth by the Office of Policy and Management.

In order to qualify for this program, eligible taxpayers, businesses, nonprofits and residents are those that "attest to or document significant economic impact by COVID-19, and/or those that document they are providing relief to those significantly affected by COVID-19" through an application process.
