Skip the Straw Kick-off - Darien and New Canaan Residents removed around 300 lbs. of trash from Pear Tree Beach
Darien Environmental Group - Beach Clean-up Nov 18th, 2018
Darien Environmental Group and Planet New Canaan kicked-off the skip the straw competition with a Beach Clean-up of Pear Tree Point Beach in Darien. Thanks to the more than 40 volunteers who turned up for the Pear Tree Point Beach clean-up on Sunday, we prevented around 300 lbs. of plastic and other materials from ending up in our oceans. That's 300lbs that won't harm marine life or end up in our food!
The competition among Darien and New Canaan is to see which town can get more people to take the skip the straw pledge. Please take the "Skip the Straw Pledge" at the http://www.darienenvironmentalgroup.org or at https://takeaction.oceanconservancy.org/page/26445/petition/1?ea.tracking.id=18LMHCEAXX and help the Darien beat New Canaan!
"We are very fortunate to live in a community where everyone wants to do the right thing. We did it today, we helped our oceans by cleaning 300 pounds of trash out of the Long Island Sound. Great Job Darien and New Canaan! We all had a great time at the beach with some music and all in for one goal- to clean our part of Long Island Sound" said Paola Sordoni - Co-chair of the Darien Environmental Group.
"While Beach cleanups make a huge difference for our community, we quickly learn that we cannot clean our way out of the plastic mess. We must reduce our use of single-use plastic and become mindful of our consumer behaviors." said Jack Egan CT Chair of Surfrider Foundation.
BYO Darien seeks to reduce check-out bag waste by promoting reusable bags. Let's join BYO Darien in reducing single use plastic by eliminating the plastic bags in town. BYO has talked with virtually every business in Darien and found that most are ready to dispense with plastic bags. In fact, many already use recycled paper bags. Now that plastic bags are not accepted into single stream recycling and instead are sent to the incinerator or the landfill, can we really justify their use? By remembering to bring our own bags each time we shop, we can prevent the tens of thousands of plastic bags currently being given out each week in Darien from polluting our environment and posing risks to our health.
We also thank Heights Pizza for bringing pizza for our participants. We held a raffle with prizes donated by Andrew Stefanou, Lanphier Day Spa and Post Corner Pizza. Three lucky Darien residents won! Now take the pledge and let Darien win!
