Darien First Selectman Pens Letter Opposing Aquarion's Proposed Hikes
First Selectman Monica McNally said the proposed hikes would have a negative impact on homeowners, businesses and municipal operations.

DARIEN, CT — In response to the proposed rate increases by Aquarion Water Company, Darien First Selectman Monica McNally has submitted a letter of opposition to the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Agency (PURA).
McNally said a proposed rate increase of almost 27 percent over a three-year period will have a negative impact on homeowners, businesses and municipal operations.
In her letter, McNally requested "a more stable approach to the scheduling of rate increases."

"Rate increases are currently modeled on paying for projects that have already been undertaken, not on budgeting for projects going forward," McNally said.
"This model leads to spikes in rates — such as the almost 27 percent over the three years that is currently being proposed. That spike, combined with the overall increase in the current cost of living due to record high inflation, will have a negative impact on all of our homeowners, businesses and the municipal operations of our town itself.

To the average Aquarion customer, the rate hikes would equate to an approximate monthly bill increase of $4.25, according to a statement from Claire Coleman, consumer counsel for the State of Connecticut.
PURA held three public hearings on the hikes over the past month.
