Darien High Ski Team Finishes 6th (Girls) and 8th (Boys) in First Race

The race at Mt. Southington Ski Area last Wednesday took place in bitterly cold, windy weather.

The Darien High School Ski Team raced in bitter cold and windy conditions Wednesday, Jan. 7 in its first race of the season against high schools representing Cheshire, Glastonbury, Gilbert, Ridgefield, and Southington at the Mt. Southington Ski Area.

The air temperature was 18 degrees with winds of 18 miles per hour and gusting to 30 causing wind chills to be near zero.

The Girls Varsity Team with a time of 337.09 finished 6th losing to Ridgefield 321.29 and Glastonbury 331.05. The Boys Varsity Team with a time of 321.94 finished 8th defeating Cheshire 376.55 and Gilbert DSQ while losing to Glastonbury 313.66, Southington 315.23 and Ridgefield 299.19.

Girls’ times this week were Katharine Graham 50.46 (Co-captain), who was the third fastest girl on the mountain last night, Maggie Skeats 52.68, Taylor Hart 53.08 (Co-captain), Carly Schoudel 54.77, Maddie Corman 61.21, Maggie Reilly 64.89, Emma Keleghan 66.97, Victoria Klarer 68.15, Sammie Berry 68.43 and Katie Schoor 81.16.

Boys’ times this week were Brooks Daley 47.85, Graham Skeats 52.32 (Co-captain), Chris von Stuelpnagel (Co-captain) 52.77, Grant Noble 56.21, Sean Collins 56.25, Seth Canaday 56.54, Hayden Nackley 57.20, Will Wilson 59.74, Gray Kline 59.80, and Ben Wilson DSQ.

Coach Brian Zeyer said, “The wind chill made it one of the coldest nights in a long time and the girls and boys skied well in very tough conditions.”

Coach Marc Power said. “I am excited for the team. We have some good skiers and some good learners. We expect great progress by the teams as the season progresses.”
