DARIEN, CT — The Town of Darien’s Department of Public Works will again offer a spring bulk pickup program this year, with collections scheduled by appointment beginning in early April.

According to an announcement on the town website, the program will run Tuesdays and Wednesdays from April 7 through June 10. There will be no pickup on May 26. Residents must schedule their collection in advance through the town’s online request system.

The town said the service is limited to items that are too large to be transported in a passenger car or SUV, and each residence is allowed one bulk pickup per calendar year.

Residents are required to place materials at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of their scheduled pickup, or they will need to reschedule the appointment. Pickups will not be made at addresses located on private streets unless the property has frontage on a public road and items are placed along that frontage.

Certain materials will not be accepted through the program. These include hazardous waste, sealed containers or barrels, liquid waste and paint, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, medical waste, batteries, drywall, bricks, stones, and yard debris such as logs, stumps, leaves and brush.

Town officials noted that wood items must be cut to less than 4 feet long and 6 inches in diameter.

Appliances such as refrigerators, dehumidifiers and air conditioners require a refrigerant sticker costing $15, which can be purchased in advance at the Department of Public Works office at Town Hall or at the scale house on Ledge Road. For safety reasons, refrigerator doors must be removed and the sticker must be attached to the appliance.

Residents who do not have email access or who need assistance scheduling a pickup can contact the Department of Public Works office directly by phone, officials said.
