DARIEN, CT — Darien First Selectman Monica McNally said the Darien Police Department will be stepping up enforcement to reinforce safe driving practices.

In her biweekly newsletter to the community, McNally said there has been an increase in pedestrian and vehicular traffic in town.

"The Darien Police Department is seeing more drivers failing to stop at stop signs, failing to come to a full stop before making a right on red (where allowed), failing to yield to pedestrians, and failing to yield for stopped school buses," McNally said. "Additionally, police are seeing an increase in speeding, operating under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, and the use of handheld electronic devices while operating a vehicle."

As a result, police will be out to enforce safe driving.

"Motorists and residents should expect to see their efforts on our main thoroughfares, pass-through streets, and less-traveled roadways," McNally said.

McNally highlighted Darien's growth in population during a recent visit to the Darien Men's Association. She said several residential and retail developments will be coming on line soon, which will require more resources from the town.

"We must welcome growth for the benefit of our town, and we must plan for the changes that are driven by that growth. The changes require additional police, fire personnel or teachers — we will address those as they come forward," McNally said.
