Darien Police Roundup: Check Washing, Forgery, Drug Arrest

DARIEN, CT — The Darien Police Department announced several notable incidents that have occurred in town over the past week.

On Nov. 30 at 12:55 p.m., a Darien resident who lives on Heights Road reported to police that he mailed a personal check from the USPS box at the Noroton Heights Post Office. The man said he discovered that the check was deposited for a much larger amount than the original check, and it was made out to a different payee.

Check washing, as it's called, has been a growing problem in the area, according to local police.

Also on Nov. 30 at 4:36 p.m., officers responded to the Shake Shack located on the Post Road on a report of counterfeit bills that were used the evening prior, police said.

The reporting party told police that two suspects placed three separate orders using fake $50 bills. The suspects were given $102 in change.

Police announced the arrest of a 40-year-old Norwalk man who was wanted in connection with a car crash that occurred in Darien on Oct. 13, 2022.

Police said on that date, officers responded to a report of a car crash on Allen O'Neill Drive. Officers found the man unresponsive in the driver's seat.

The man later told police that he consumed an illicit drug, police said, noting that drugs found at the scene tested positive for heroin.

On Nov. 23, an arrest warrant was obtained which charged the man with possession of a controlled substance and operating under the influence.

The man turned himself into police on Nov. 30, and he was released after posting 10 percent of his $5,000 bond, police said.

The man was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
