Darien Police Warn Of Police Impersonation Phone Scam

"These calls may sound convincing and can include spoofed phone numbers, badge numbers, or officer names," police said.

DARIEN, CT — The Darien Police Department is warning residents about a scam involving police impersonation.

"We are seeing scams where callers claim to be police officers and say you have an active arrest warrant, missed jury duty, or owe fines - then demand immediate payment," police said in a social media post Wednesday.

Police said scammers often rely on fear and urgency to pressure victims into acting quickly.

"These calls may sound convincing and can include spoofed phone numbers, badge numbers, or officer names," police said. "Remember, legitimate law enforcement will never pressure you to resolve matters over the phone, text, or email, demand payment, or request gift cards or cryptocurrency."

Residents should not engage, argue or provide information if they receive suspicious calls. End the call and independently verify by contacting the department at 203-662-5300.
