Darien Postpones Annual Paving Program

Citing high costs, the town said Wednesday it will postpone the annual paving program that's usually slated for July and August.

DARIEN, CT — The town of Darien announced Wednesday that it is postponing the annual paving program due to high costs. The program usually takes place during the months of July and August.

"Due to an abundance of concern regarding the costs, the Town plans to rebid, seeking fair pricing once oil prices drop and stabilize," a news release from the Darien Department of Public Works said. "Paving will be rescheduled for early spring 2023 with a focus on completion of roads near schools, during spring recess. Darien police will control traffic during the paving program to allow safe passage through work zones."

Darien also announced the postponement on its Facebook page, and several people voiced frustration with the decision.

"This is super frustrating, our road was dug up for new water pipes 15 months ago, all of them are uneven and really bumpy. We were told it would be last summer that the town would fix it," one resident said.

Others criticized the postponement and pointed to the town's desire to purchase Great Island for $103 million.

"Great let’s spend a $100 million on buying an island no one wants and leave our roads unpaved in time for winter," another resident said.

The town said further notification will be published once a schedule and a revised street list are solidified and approved.
