Darien Public Schools Preparing For New Kindergarten Age Requirement

Beginning next school year, children need to turn 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 in order to be automatically eligible for kindergarten.

DARIEN, CT — Darien Public Schools is expected to hold informational sessions for families in the coming weeks regarding the state's new kindergarten age requirement.

Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, children in CT must be 5 years old by Sept. 1 to be eligible for kindergarten. This is a change from the previous cutoff date of Jan. 1. More information on the legislative change can be found here.

"The district is in the process of developing procedures to provide support to families with children who may be ready for kindergarten despite not meeting the new age criteria," said Superintendent of Darien Public Schools Dr. Alan Addley in his weekly communication to the district last Friday. "We will send more detailed communication and host information sessions for families in the coming weeks."
