Darien Resident Falls Victim To Fraudulent Credit Card Scam: PD

Someone opened up a store credit card account in the victim's name.

DARIEN, CT — A Darien resident recently was victimized by a scammer who fraudulently obtained a Williams Sonoma credit card in the victim's name and charged nearly $3,000 to the account, according to Darien police.

The incident was reported on March 11 when the Brookside Road resident received notification from the store about the fake account.

"The company was able to tell him that the card had been opened at a William Sonoma store in White Plains, NY and that the card had also been charged on February 24th, 2019 in the amount of $2,957 at that store," stated Darien police.

Additionally, the victim also showed officers a letter he received informing him that someone also had fraudulently attempted to open a Nordstrom account in his name, but that application had been denied.

"Neither of these applications had been made by the actual complainant," police said. "In response to this activity, the complainant checked his credit cards for any unusual activity. Two fraudulent charges were found, both at Ulta Beauty stores. The first was made on February 22nd in the amount of $111.16, and the second on March 8th in the amount of $85."
