Darien Rowers Dominate Local Regattas

Members of Maritime Rowing Club Score Multiple Medals

Darien rowers from the Maritime Rowing Club scooped up an array of medals at multiple recent regattas.

“It’s been a long winter, but the kids have worked tirelessly throughout to be prepared for our spring events,” remarked varsity Coach Yan Vengerovskiy of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk. “I feel confident that we are on the right track for our future regattas.”

The Club commanded quite a presence at the Mercer Sprints in Princeton, New Jersey, overall claiming nine gold medals, four silver and three bronze medals out of 16 events.

Gold medals were snagged by Darien High School juniors David Orner and Phillip Bogdanov in the Men’s Varsity 4X event and sophomore Dan Cone in the Men’s 2nd Varsity 4X event.

Darien High School junior Brandon Golino captured the silver medal in the Mens’ Varsity Lightweight 8+ while sophomore John Byrne and King School junior Riley Marsh took silver in the Men’s 2nd Varsity 4X race. Orner and Golino also took home a bronze medal in the Men’s Varsity 2X event and Men’s Lightweight Varsity 4X event respectively.

SARATOGA INVITATIONAL

The Saratoga Invitational yielded four gold medals for Dan Cone in the Men’s Junior B 2X event, David Orner in the Men’s 1V 4X faceoff, Riley Marsh in the Men’s 2nd Varsity 4X race and DHS junior Gabriela Kulesz in the Women’s 1V 4X event.

Silver medals were earned by Bogdanov and DHS sophomore John Byrne in the 2nd Varsity 4X event while DHS freshman Reese Gregory and junior Carey O’Brien captured second place in the Men’s Frosh 8 race. DHS freshman Alexander Williams took home a silver medal as well for his second place finish in the Men’s F/N 4X race.

Golino snagged a bronze medal in the Lightweight Men’s 8 competition.

LONG ISLAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

DHS freshmen Tim Cone and Andrew Orner along with King School freshman Ethan Marsh took the gold in the Men’s Novice 4X event at the Long Island Junior Championships.

The New Canaan novice crew led the charge on Long Island for the Junior Rowing Championships. In the women’s events, Skylar Severance, Rachel Smith, Sarah Bazata and Lexy Smicka took home the gold medal while Livia Scura, Uma Basu, Casey Martin, Maddy Culpepper, Mariana Siebold, Fiona Taney, Mary Cate Carlo, Erin Corbett and Anne Johnston snagged a bronze medal.

ROW FOR AUTISM

It was the first warm day of spring and Darien rowers shined throughout the Row for Autism in Port Washington, New York.

Gold medal recipients included DHS freshmen Andrew Orner and Tim Cone, and Ethan Marsh in the Men’s Novice 4X competition; O’Brien, Gregory and DHS freshman James Hilton in the Men’s Freshman 8+A; and freshman Tighe Ekern in the Men’s Freshman 8+B race.

Williams scored a silver medal for the club in the Men’s Novice 4X event.
